The art of making masks has been integral to the beginning of theatre and still remains a fascinating process. Norcostco offers many books and tapes on mask making. Below are some introductions to some basic processes for various types of mask making techniques.
This method uses a positive object over which materials are formed. This is one of the fastest methods of making masks. Because you see the outside of the form this type of mask is best for broad, bold designs where fine detail is not important. When using non-solvent activated materials the actor will use his own face as the positive shape, being careful to use the correct release for the product used. Norcostco offers water activated plaster bandages, fibre mache (a stronger more flexible solvent activated product), and thermoplastic sheets in various weights and finishes called Unnatural Resources. These products are very fast to use since they become flexible in hot water or with a heat gun and rigid when cool. They are self adhesive and paintable. The sheets are large (22" x 50") and inexpensive ($17-$22)

These products allow the designer to concentrate on the artistic details by using ready made mask forms to apply details and decoration. Norcostco offers standard harlequin style masks and clear plastic masks that can be cut into 1/2 masks. We even have that diagonal cut mask for you "Phantom" fans.

These masks are made of latex or foam latex and are the most time consuming but finely detailed masks. This process is valuable for film, television, and intimate theatrical presentations. Often the prosthetics are made in sections to give the actor's face more mobility and expression. Norcostco offers many types of ready made prosthetic pieces such as bald caps, horns, old age sets, noses, and even Spock ears. To make your own prosthetics you must first sculpt a positive image of the finished product. Plasticene clay works best for this. The clay is coated with a release agent such as petroleum jelly or even foil and a negative cast is made in plaster or a flexible molding material. This negative cast is sealed and liquid latex or foam latex is then slushed into it. Oftentimes many layers are needed with sufficient drying time in between. If it is important to fit the performer's face exactly first a negative mold and then a positive cast of the face known as a life mask is made. This can be used as an insert and foam latex can be injected between the life mask and the negative cast of the finished product. Life masks are also useful for makeup studies. When the latex is pulled from the mold it can be finished with airbrush painting or by applying makeup and hair pieces. Norcostco carries Castor sealer and rubber mask grease to help standard makeup blend from prosthetic to bare skin. Spirit gum is the traditional adhesive but can cause damage to prosthetics. We carry special prosthetic adhesives and removers that will help your effort last the run of the show.
